OVERVIEW
Bloom 2025 – Award-Winning Circular Economy Garden
At Ireland’s Bloom Festival 2025, I created a show garden backed by the European Commission, celebrating the possibilities of the circular economy.
The design blended reclaimed materials, creative reuse, and climate-resilient planting, proving that sustainability and beauty belong side by side.
The garden received Gold, Best in Category, the Sustainability Award, and the People’s Choice Award, highlighting both its design strength and its powerful message.
The garden’s main aim is to challenge people’s perspectives on materials and inspire them to see the potential for reuse and repurposing. By showcasing the beauty and benefits of reusing discarded items, the garden not only provides a visually stunning backdrop for the plants but also serves as a wildlife habitat and a source of personal satisfaction and fulfilment in giving items a new life.
Beyond aesthetics, the garden demonstrates the principles of a circular economy—where waste is minimised, and materials are continuously repurposed rather than discarded.
KEY
FEATURES
01 Reclaimed Railway Track Framework: The garden integrates bold, reclaimed railway tracks as edging and structural elements, paying homage to industrial heritage and resourceful design.
02 Sustainable Seating and Screening: Bespoke benches and screens crafted from reclaimed pallets and scaffold boards serve as a haven for relaxation. Their thoughtful design also incorporates practical water runoff features, blending utility with beauty.
03 Material Diversity and Repurposing: This garden showcases innovative use of materials that might otherwise be discarded, such as old building bricks, tiles, fabrics, and industrial fixings. These elements are thoughtfully integrated into the design, demonstrating their aesthetic and functional potential while reducing waste and promoting sustainability
