Returning to Bloom: Reflections on a Circular Garden — and the Story Behind It

I’m pleased to share that I’ll be returning to Bord Bio Bloom this year .
As that news landed, it felt like the right moment to look back—not just at the garden itself, but at how it was made.
To do that, I’ve put together a short film that walks through the key ideas behind the Renewal Garden.
A Garden Explained, Not Just Shown
Show gardens are often photographed, shared, and moved on from quickly. This one deserved more time.
The video focuses on the decisions that shaped the garden:
How circular economy thinking guided material choices
Why reuse and repurposing were designed in from day one
How planting and structure were chosen to evolve beyond the show
What happens to a garden after the event finishes
It’s less about spectacle. More about responsibility.
Returning to Bloom feels like a continuation of a design ethos rather than a new chapter.
The same principles still guide my work:
Design that respects resources
Gardens that improve with time
Spaces shaped by people, place, and purpose
If last year’s garden asked questions, this year’s will take them further.
If you haven’t watched the film yet, it’s a good place to start.
