Why Every Garden I Design Starts in 3D

For years, I was known as The 3D Gardener.
Long before Studio Stour existed, my career was built around architectural visualisation. I spent more than a decade creating photorealistic imagery for architects, developers and landscape professionals, helping bring designs to life long before construction began.
Back then, working in 3D was something that set me apart.
Today, things have changed.
Most garden designers now offer some form of 3D visualisation. That's a positive step for the industry because it gives clients a much clearer understanding of what they're investing in. But for many businesses, 3D is still an optional extra or an additional service.
For me, it has never been that.
3D isn't an add-on. It's how I design!
When I founded Studio Stour, I didn't leave my visualisation background behind.
I built it into the design process.
Every garden I design is developed in 3D as standard. It's not an upgrade, an optional package or an unexpected cost. It's simply the way I work.
Why?
Because I believe good design comes from understanding a place before it's built.
Can you see how the evening light reaches your seating area?
Does the raised planting feel too dominant?
Is the relationship between the house and the garden balanced?
Those are questions that are much easier to answer when you can see your future garden rather than trying to imagine it from a plan.
Better decisions create better gardens
Garden design is an investment.
Whether it's a compact courtyard or a complete landscape transformation, I want every client to feel confident about the decisions they're making.
Detailed 3D visualisation allows us to refine materials, planting, levels and layouts before construction begins.
That means fewer surprises, better communication and, ultimately, better gardens.
More than just a beautiful image
People often comment on how realistic my visualisations look.
While that's always nice to hear, realism isn't actually the goal.
The purpose of every visual is to help solve design challenges.
Can we improve the flow through the garden?
Would a multi-stem tree frame the view better than a standard?
Does a reclaimed brick path feel more appropriate than porcelain paving?
Visualisation helps answer those questions long before the first spade enters the ground.
Studio Stour today
Looking back, I'm incredibly proud of how the business has evolved.
The 3D Gardener gave me the opportunity to combine my passion for landscape with years of experience in architectural visualisation.
Studio Stour has allowed me to take that one step further.
Today, I design gardens shaped by people, place and purpose, while continuing to use the same visualisation skills that have been at the heart of my career for more than a decade.
The technology has become more common.
The way I use it hasn't changed.
It's still about helping clients understand, explore and feel excited about the places we're creating together.
Because great gardens don't begin with construction
They begin with a vision.
